Day 4 - Drifting Out of the Driftless Area

Friday, September 13, Richland Center to Madison, WI, 75.3 miles, 12.3 mph average, 39.5 mph Max , 6h06m riding time, 2751 ascent, 2535 descent.

We start riding at 8:50am and it's good to hear that there's no chance of rain today. It stormed hard the night before (glad we're not camping). There was some standing water here and there. It's cloudy and there is a nice tailwind that's pretty consistent out of the west. We quickly get on some back roads that follow the Pine River and head toward Gotham.

Bat Cave

The last time we were here the Bat Cave was in much better shape. Look HERE.

Not as many hills today but a couple of major ones just to keep us in shape. The first part of the day was much flatter and the tailwind is nice. No real good place to stop and have lunch, so we buy some food at a grocery store in Spring Green and have a picnic near the Wisconsin River.

After lunch we ride by Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin, and stop briefly to throw away some garbage (that was left over from lunch) in a trash container. It's very windy here. Then we reach our first major climb of the day getting to a road called High Point Road. We wanted to ride on Amacher Hollow Road but it was closed, and there was a High Water sign. A local friendly guy stopped by in his car and told us a bridge was probably under a foot of water. We have to detour and add a few miles, along with another big climb. This does lead to some pretty scenery though.

Our 6 mile detour ends when we reach the other side of Amacher Hollow.

It's closed on this end too.

We get back on the route and ride through the very scenic Knight's Hollow and Knight's Valley. Next we get to Black Earth and take a break.

Soon we reach the Western Madison Suburbs after one last climb on Old Sauk Pass. We arrive at our destination at 5:00pm.
